This is an brief account of our expedition to Chulu East
in the Annapurna region of Nepal back in Oct/Nov 1990. This was our first
successful Himalayan ascent. There were four members on this climb and
three made it to the top, including Peck Choo our lady member. Chulu East
resides in the Annapurna range of mountains. It is a very pleasant experience
to trek up the Marsyandi river valley. This peak is suitable for climbers
attempting their first Himalayan peak. Off course you should already have gone
for a mountaineering course before trying to climb in the Himalayas. A good
place to acquire basic mountaineering skills is New Zealand. With the progress
of mountaineering skill in Singapore over the last decade, it is now possible to
acquire most of the necessary technical skills locally here before going on a
guided trip. Contact me if your have a group and I can organise some basic
training for you.

Picture on the left shows two of the climbers crossing a glacier on the way to high camp. On the glacier, when the sun is shining, it can get very hot. However, as soon as the sun sets, the temperature plummets to well below freezing point. The views of the snow and ice formations on a glacier are surreal; you can never imagine them until you see it for yourself.
Picture
on the left shows me climbing up the final slopes leading to the summit
of Chulu East, which is about 6200m high. To climb Chulu East, you have
to use the same route as The Round Annapurna Trek
.
Back home, we got the Straits Time to publish an article on our climb.
