Description of Belachan

A dried and fermented, strongly flavoured paste made of shrimp that is dark brown or purplish in color. Sold usually in hard soap-sized blocks or sometimes in round discs (as in Malacca). Also widely used in Thai cooking, such as in Belachan fried rice.
