Hairy tales
In ancient times, the Chinese accorded great significance to the hair on a person's body, said Master Ong Thiam Peng, geomancer and expert on Chinese culture and traditions. From research into classical texts, he found out that the ancient Chinese linked the quantity, physical characteristics and location of hair with status, longevity, mental well-being and even personality.

Observation of a person's hair, its quality and texture can be revealing. Master Ong observes, for example, moderately dense hair which is silky, glossy and soft to the touch signifies intelligence, benevolence, wealth and nobility. Hair that is dry and brittle tend to reflect that the person is stubborn, rebellious and difficult to get along with. It also signifies low intelligence.

Men with hair that is stiff and coarse will most probably be impatient, petty, and with a tendency for rashness; for women, it is a sign of constant conflict with husband and children.

Eyebrows too can be read. When they meet, it signifies a low position in life and the person will not enjoy support from siblings and contemporaries. A good set of eyebrows is one of moderate thickness with the right shape, colour, texture and if they are longer than the eye, it is a sign of early success.

Hair on the cheeks spells of rocky relationships between parents and spouses while hair sprouting out of ears is an indication of longevity.

Moustache and goatees

Master Ong said the moustache represents the career aspects of a person while the goatee represents power. When both are well shaped and dense, it points to success after the age of 50. He however cautioned that males should not just sprout a goatee only as this implies poverty but it is acceptable to grow only the moustache.

The Chinese believe that males should not grow beards and moustaches when the father is still alive. This tradition adheres to family protocol in which it was considered rude and disrespectful to the father.

Hair on the body also tell tales. Hair on the shoulder is an indication that the person is filial while a hairy stomach is a sign of wealth. But a hair-less tummy means that person will not reap the rewards of his diligence. Hair on the thighs represents good career advancement. He also said that if the chest carries not more than ten strands of long, black and glossy hair, the person is bound to achieve great fame in his lifetime.

A high hairline represents refinement, strong character and a good, healthy and long life.

And as for hair loss, it is natural to start shedding hair as one gets older (after age 30). This is a sign of good mental development. However, if one starts to shed prematurely, then it signifies a short life or one with no offspring.
