Song of Deeds

The Price if Grandoyne was a good knight and gallant,
Strong his hands and valourous in battle;
Against him now comes Ronald the Great Captain ...
He cannot help it, a mortal fear runs through him;
Fain would he fly, but what's the good? he cannot,
The count assails him with such ferocious valour,
That to the nassal the whole helmet is shattered,
Cloven to the nose and to the teeth and the palate,
The jaz'rain hauberk and the breast-bone and the back-bone,
Both silver bows off the golden saddles;
Horseman and horse clean asunder he slashes,
Lifeless he leaves them and the peices past patching.
The men of Spain fall a-wailing in sadness:
The French all cry:"What strokes!
And what a Champion!"
