This
is an brief account of our expedition to climb Island Peak. Island Peak
(6189m) is located in the Everest Region of Nepal. It is one of the easier
trekking peaks to climb. The main difficulty is a steep 150m snow and ice
face that must be climbed to gain the summit ridge. We organised the Island
Peak Expedition back in Nov 1988. This was the first expedition organised
by the club. Due to lack of experience we only managed to reach the base
of this snow and ice face. Nevertheless, we gained much experience from
this expedition which stood us in good stead for subsequent Himalayan climbs.

Picture on the left shows the members on the small glacier that leads the ridge of Island Peak. To get to Island Peak, you can fly to the remote airstrip of Lukla from Kathmundu. However, as Lukla is at an altitude of 3000m, you may have problems acclimatizing. Far better to spend an additional 7 days to trek out from Jiri, which is a day's bus journey from Kathmundu.
